What Is a Noise Impact Assessment?

A Noise Impact Assessment (NIA) is a detailed report used to evaluate how a proposed development might affect, or be affected by, surrounding noise conditions. We carry out assessments in line with BS 8233:2014 and BS 4142:2014+A1:2019.

When Is a Noise Assessment Required?

  • Installing external mechanical plant — air source heat pumps, fans or chillers
  • Building new homes close to busy roads, railways or industrial areas
  • Converting commercial buildings into residential dwellings
  • Developing mixed-use schemes where housing sits alongside retail or leisure
  • Carrying out construction or demolition in noise-sensitive areas

Heat Pump Noise Assessments

Heat pump installations — although environmentally friendly — can create continuous or tonal noise which may disturb nearby properties. We assess heat pump systems using BS 4142, which helps identify whether the noise is likely to cause complaints or require mitigation.

Our Process

Initial Review We begin by reviewing your project plans, identifying potential noise sources, and understanding the local planning context and any conditions imposed by the authority.

Site Survey Using Class 1 precision sound level meters, we conduct on-site monitoring—usually over one or more 24-hour periods—to measure existing background noise levels. For equipment like heat pumps, air conditioning units, or industrial plant, we also assess sound power levels and site geometry.

Data Analysis & Modelling Survey data is analysed in line with standards such as BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 for industrial and mechanical sound, and BS 8233:2014 for residential environments. Where needed, we use specialist software to model predicted noise propagation and assess potential impacts.

Mitigation Advice If necessary, we recommend tailored noise mitigation strategies, such as acoustic enclosures, sound barriers, or layout changes. These are practical, cost-effective, and aimed at ensuring compliance with planning policy and environmental guidelines.

Reporting Our final report includes all measurement data, compliance assessments, mitigation recommendations, and conclusions. It’s formatted clearly to support your planning application, and often includes summary pages specifically designed for planning officers.

We are fully up to date with National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) requirements, ProPG: Planning & Noise guidelines, and individual Local Authority validation checklists across the UK. This means fewer revisions, fewer delays—and better planning outcomes for you.

Service Areas – Nationwide Coverage Across the UK
